The Hotel Gfell redefines high-altitude hospitality: a return to the peaks of Fiè allo Sciliar, where the Mair family’s historical legacy meets a transparent architectural style that blurs the boundaries with nature. From breakfast in the old barn to the culinary sophistication of the Schönblick Restaurant, your stay is a “modern fairy tale” that is constantly reinventing itself; here, the luxury of tranquility takes center stage

There is a subtle apprehension that accompanies a return to a place where one has felt profoundly at ease: the fear that the spell might be broken, that memory has embellished reality too much. But as we drove up the road leading to Fiè allo Sciliar, toward that natural balcony suspended between the woods and the peaks, that strange feeling immediately melted away with the first deep breath of air filled with well-being. Returning to theHotel Gfell after a year was like picking up a conversation that had never ended, rediscovering intact that rare ability to silence the noise of the world around us. Time flows in a circle up there among those meadows, where nature dictates the rhythms and the architecture respectfully bends to the mountain’s profile, eliminating every barrier between us and the landscape. And in this second encounter, the sensations I felt were not only reaffirmed but also renewed, offering new shades of tranquility.

A WELCOME THAT FEELS LIKE HOME AND HISTORY
I was greeted by the genuine smile and energy of Julian Mair, the young and spirited heart of the business, which he runs and preserves together with his family. It is in their welcome that you sense the true essence of this place: a story that began in 1967 with Grandpa Toni and a small Jausenstation, which has now become a charming retreat, without losing that rural sincerity that exudes a sense of security and home. “We wanted to share all this beauty with our guests… and the dream has become a reality.” There is a profound continuity in the way Andreas, Manuela, and Julian care for their guests; a hospitality that doesn’t follow protocols, free from rigidity, capable of making you feel part of an evolution rooted in local tradition yet looking toward the future with grace and respect for its roots.

THE BREAKFAST RITUAL
The first moment of true rejuvenation “awakens” with the morning, as you cross the threshold of the renovated old barn. Entering this space, which retains its original façade—a rustic testament to fifty years of history—is like stepping back in time, yet surrounded by discreet, modern luxury. Then comes breakfast, which here is not just a meal, but a sensory ritual. As the sunlight begins to illuminate the “Gfell meadows” through the large windows, the room fills with the aroma of freshly baked bread, homemade cakes, and artisanal jams—true works of goodness crafted by Manuela—that seem to encapsulate the flavor of the surrounding woods. It is an invitation to slow down: to savor every bite with a view of the peaks, feeling that the day needs no predetermined plans, but only this perfect silence.

SCHÖNBLICK RESTAURANT: CUISINE FULL OF SUBSTANCE AND FLAVOR
If breakfast awakens the senses, dinner at Schönblick Restaurant is the perfect way to end the day. Compared to my ‘first taste,’ I found the culinary offerings even more refined, where the substance of South Tyrolean tradition harmonizes with an aesthetic and gustatory experience that has been further refined. The cuisine continues to speak the language of authenticity, relying on the absolute quality of local ingredients, often produced directly or selected from trusted suppliers.

Another standout feature is the selection of meats, personally curated by Julian’s brother, an expert butcher, who guarantees excellent cuts such as those of Manzo di Fiè. I rediscovered—and chose once again—dishes that are now a sure bet, such as the Canederli, this time made with buckwheat, served on a bed of sauerkraut, or the Wienerschnitzel and the Kaisershmarren, with an extra touch in their presentation and preparation. Needless to say, the apple strudel, served still warm, won me over completely. Simple, fragrant, genuinely homemade. Simply delicious.

Then there are the surprises, such as the Tortelli with beetroot, mountain cheese, pear, and black truffle, a creative tribute to the local region; or a journey to the seaside with the Gnocchi with octopus and cherry tomatoes.

Accompanying each course is a wine cellar boasting over 230 labels, expertly described by Julian with the passion of someone who loves making his guests feel truly at home. You only need to watch him to realize that he’s talking about exactly what captures his interest.
THE LUXURY OF STILLNESS BETWEEN GLASS AND NATURE
Between a gastronomic delight and the relaxation of a good morning that begins in the calm of nature, true well-being at Gfell is discovered by remaining still. Yes, still. It seems like a contradiction, but in reality, it represents the true luxury of this mountain retreat. The rooms seem to converse with the outdoors, allowing you to live in close contact with pastures and woods. The mountain-view sauna remains one of the most cherished spaces: there, as the heat envelops the body and your gaze drifts among the pines, you realize that true regeneration does not come from doing, but from the breathing space you give your thoughts. That is the true oxygen.

That is why leaving Gfell becomes, paradoxically, the moment when you already start planning your next return, knowing that its promise of pure beauty will be fulfilled once again.
