In the heart of Monforte d’Alba, one of the undisputed capitals of Piedmont’s great red wines, wine excellence became the perfect target for a gang of highly specialised thieves. The historic Conterno Fantino winery was targeted by a sophisticated crew, stripped in a single raid of its most prized treasures: more than 3,000 bottles of prestigious Barolo, with a total value running into the hundreds of thousands of euros.
The Story
What is making headlines, more than the size of the haul itself, is the cold precision of the raid. At precisely 11:58 p.m., four masked men wearing dark gloves slipped through the vineyards, emerging from the darkness like ghosts. There was no noisy break-in, no haphazard force. Once inside the warehouses, the thieves operated with an almost surgical knowledge of the logistics: they started up the winery’s own forklifts and, for around three hours, carefully selected the most valuable cases, starting with the legendary Vigna Sorì Ginestra, a true icon coveted by international auctions.
Their getaway was a masterclass in cunning and coordination. After loading the cases onto the winery’s own vans, the thieves pushed the vehicles down the access road with the engines switched off, moving in absolute silence so as not to wake the residents. Only once they reached the provincial road did the roar of the engines signal the precious cargo’s final disappearance.
A professional operation of this kind closely echoes other disturbing incidents that have recently hit the high-end wine industry, including the theft suffered by Banfi winery just a few months ago. Among the main leads being investigated by the Carabinieri, who are examining every frame of the surveillance footage, is the possibility of a commissioned theft: an elite black market ready to move legendary labels destined for the hidden cellars of wealthy private collectors.
