The revenge of an Italian-Peruvian couple who found the courage to reinvent themselves. Today, Oscar Delgado and Nicole Bordoli sell fruit and vegetables in California’s farmers market, without regretting their old job in fine dining.
The story
Oscar Delgado is a chef who dared to switch from fine dining to farmers market, setting up quite a profitable business. He worked in a gourmet restaurant in San Francisco, California, but with the arrival of the covid pandemic he was fired; so, he rolled up his sleeves and, together with his wife Nicole Bordoli (also active in the catering sector) decided to start over. In 2020, the couple opened a stall in a city market; now they sell fruit, vegetables, fresh homemade pasta, and other genuine products but, above all, he has found fulfilment in his new job. “This project was an opportunity to overcome our fear and make our dreams come true. We had nothing to lose, but we had everything to win."

They started with a few products and now they call it The Italian Corner, their island of happiness which offers the possibility of enjoying pastas with sauces prepared fresh on site while strolling around the market. There is no shortage of quality ready-made dishes (lasagna in 6 different flavours) and gluten-free foods. Finally, after a long time, they have found the courage to start their own business, able to make them comfortable and, above all, which allows them to work side by side.

She is Italian and he is Peruvian, they have been together for more than 10 years and have a 6-year-old daughter, Catilina, who is also enthusiastic about her parents' new business. “She is glad that mom is more at home. And she helps whenever she can, even putting labels on the containers,” says Nicole. There is also another advantage: the expenses for the rent of the stall in the farmers market are quite low and, in fact, the two have a new project; they want to expand to new markets in the county (“we currently attend 8 to 10 in high season”) and also expand the food proposal.

“I have the desire to introduce Peruvian dishes on the menu as well,” says Oscar, and no doubt his wife will back him up. But if you are in the area and don't feel like going out to eat and shop, no problems: The Italian Corner has a site where you can easily order what you need.
