What are the best 3-key Michelin hotels in the world? In its 2026 “Best of the Best” selection, the French guide highlights a charming Umbrian castle. Here is the complete list by continent.

Staying at a luxury hotel isn’t just about finding a stylish bed and impeccable service. Some places manage to do much more: they transform your stay into a story, into a timeless realm where architecture, scenery, cuisine, and hospitality all become part of a single experience. The Michelin Key was created precisely to recognize these establishments. If a Michelin star signifies excellence in dining, the key represents its equivalent in the world of hospitality. And among the thousands of hotels evaluated by inspectors, only a select few reach the highest level: three Michelin keys. The number speaks for itself. There are 2,457 hotels worldwide awarded at least one Key, but only 143 have earned the highest distinction. A selection that brings together places capable of redefining the concept of contemporary hospitality. Some are among the most luxurious destinations on the planet, others surprisingly accessible, but all share a specific characteristic: they transform the destination itself into part of the experience. Many of these hotels offer activities that can fill entire days without ever leaving the property: nature excursions, Michelin-starred restaurants, private beaches, or award-winning spas. Each property develops its own identity, often deeply rooted in the local area.

Asia and Oceania: Ancient Rituals and Contemporary Luxury

Within the global landscape of the three keys, Asia and Oceania represent one of the most fascinating regions. Here, the concept of hospitality oscillates between opposing extremes: ancient rituals and ultra-modern architecture, casual elegance and spectacular opulence. Among the most evocative examples is Gora Kadan, in Japan. This hotel originated as an ancient retreat for the imperial family and today welcomes guests with tatami rooms and open-air stone baths. All this is just over an hour from Tokyo, accessible by shinkansen. In the background, on clear days, the silhouette of Mount Fuji appears. In India, the journey takes on an almost cinematic dimension at the Taj Lake Palace, built in 1740. The palace seems to float on the waters of Lake Pichola like an unreal vision. Inside, works of art alternate with waterfront restaurants and spa treatments inspired by local traditions. On the Indonesian island of Sumba, however, Nihi Sumba offers a different take on luxury. Originally a simple surf lodge, it now features some twenty villas nestled between the beach and the jungle. The daily experience includes unexpected activities: from stone carving to visits to local villages and encounters with Sandalwood horses, animals considered sacred in the island’s culture. Among the establishments awarded three keys is Ceylon Tea Trails in Sri Lanka, considered by Michelin inspectors to be the best hotel in the country. Historic colonial mansions nestled among tea plantations create a retreat where time seems to slow down.

Europe: History and Contemporary Hospitality

Europe dominates the Three Keys rankings with the highest number of award-winning hotels. France leads the list with twenty-three properties, but the entire continent offers a stunning mosaic of historic residences transformed into luxury destinations. One of the most fascinating examples is Reschio Hotel, in Italy. The building originated as a 10th-century Umbrian castle. After more than a decade of meticulous restoration, the property has become a place where historic architecture and contemporary design coexist naturally. In Croatia, the scene changes completely with Villa Nai 3.3, a structure literally carved into the Dalmatian hillside using stone quarried during construction. The result resembles a sort of yacht anchored on dry land, with views of olive groves and the Adriatic Sea. The United Kingdom responds with The Newt in Somerset, a country estate dating back three centuries and converted into a hotel in 2019. Monumental gardens, artisanal cider production, and rooms distributed between the Georgian villa and the restored farm buildings create an atmosphere that seems straight out of an English novel.

Middle East and Africa: Spectacular Nature and Iconic Architecture

The debut of the Michelin Guide in the Middle East and Africa has brought some of the most evocative hotels on the planet into the spotlight. Here, the relationship with the landscape often becomes the central element of the experience. In the Namibian desert, Zannier Sonop offers luxury tents inspired by the colonial aesthetic of the 1920s. Guests sleep atop massive granite boulders within a private reserve spanning over 14,000 acres, home to leopards, hyenas, and desert foxes. Evenings conclude with gala dinners served by butlers in evening attire. In Kenya, the stay takes on an almost surreal quality at Giraffe Manor, a 1930s ivy-covered estate where a herd of wild giraffes roams the lawn. The animals approach the windows during breakfast, while guests visit the nearby sanctuary dedicated to their protection. Urban luxury reaches spectacular heights at Atlantis the Royal Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. The complex features 795 ultra-luxurious rooms and 17 restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. The Royal Mansion, with its private infinity pool, is one of the most exclusive penthouses on the planet. Other African hotels awarded three keys include Kasbah Tamadot in Asni and La Mamounia in Marrakech, Morocco, as well as Londolozi Private Game Reserve and Royal Malewane in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

North America: Iconic Cities and Spectacular Nature

North America is home to 21 hotels with three Michelin keys, spread across the United States, Mexico, Canada, and the Caribbean. The selection ranges from urban landmarks to nature-immersed retreats. Among the most striking examples is Sage Lodge in Montana, situated along the Yellowstone River. The property offers privileged access to excursions in the national park and a hospitality experience centered around farm-to-table cuisine sourced from local ranches. On the Caribbean island of Saint-Barthélemy, Cheval Blanc St-Barth Isle de France is the region’s only three-key hotel. The property also holds the Palace classification from the French Ministry of Tourism and features rooms along Flamands Beach. New York stands out with several award-winning properties: Aman New York, Casa Cipriani New York, Crosby Street Hotel, and The Whitby Hotel, the latter renowned for its exuberant design by Kit Kemp and its private cinema. The United States also boasts a long list of award-winning hotels: Canyon Ranch Tucson in Arizona, The Beverly Hills Hotel, Post Ranch Inn, SingleThread Inn, Hotel Bel-Air, Auberge du Soleil, Meadowood Napa Valley in California, Little Palm Island Resort & Spa in Florida, Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort in Hawaii, and Amangiri in Utah. Canada features two iconic properties: Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge on Vancouver Island and Fogo Island Inn in Joe Batt’s Arm. In Mexico, the selection includes Hotel Esencia in Playa del Carmen, Xinalani in Puerto Vallarta, and One&Only Mandarina in Lo de Marcos.

Central and South America: Spectacular Landscapes

The final region in the Michelin selection takes us through some of the most scenic landscapes on the planet. Six hotels here have earned the highest distinction. In Brazil, the standout properties include Hotel das Cataratas, a Belmond Hotel at the Iguazú Falls, and the elegant Rosewood São Paulo, an architectural transformation of a former 1950s hospital into a building covered in vertical gardens. Chile is represented by two properties in Torres del Paine National Park: Awasi Patagonia and Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa, both nestled within the spectacular landscapes of Patagonia. In Costa Rica, the honor goes to Nayara Springs, located near the Arenal Volcano, while in Peru, Las Casitas, a Belmond Hotel in the Colca Valley, stands out amidst the Andean mountains. This global geography demonstrates how contemporary hospitality has long since transcended the concept of mere accommodation. Hotels awarded three Michelin keys craft multifaceted experiences where architecture, nature, gastronomy, and local culture intertwine to become part of a single narrative. A collection of places capable of transforming travel into something more than mere movement: a true immersion in the character of each destination.
