Nikita Malhotra has emerged as a prominent figure in New York's culinary scene, blending her love for wine with the art of hospitality, always delivering unforgettable tastings and impeccable service.
Nikita Malhotra, born and raised in 1990s New York City, earned a degree in philosophy from Goucher College and spent the following six years working in various independent bookstores.
Afterward, she decided to enroll in a culinary school that included a wine course, where she discovered her love for the world of wine and gastronomy. Her journey into the world of wine began when she learned about the principles of biodynamic agriculture at the Rudolf Steiner School, an encounter that inspired her to seek out vintners committed to sustainable and responsible farming practices.
Subsequently, Nikita gained solid experience in the retail and wine shop sector for over a decade.
Nikita served as the Wine Director at the renowned "Tangled Vine," a wine bar with a selection of 150 aged biodynamic and organic wines. Later, she joined the wine team at the prestigious "Tribeca Grill," under the guidance of David Gordon, the wine director of the "Myriad Restaurant Group."
Her professional journey reached its peak when she started working at KO (Momofuku Ko) restaurant in New York, which has held Two MICHELIN Stars since 2009.
In her role as Beverage Director and Sommelier at KO, Nikita brings creativity and personality to three award-winning rooms: the private room, the main dining room, and the bar area. Contrary to the common notion that sommeliers are separate entities from the kitchen, Nikita believes that sommeliers are fundamental to the restaurant experience. The best sommeliers are true architects of hospitality and work in perfect harmony with all elements of service.
Her talent and passion for wine were recognized by the MICHELIN Guide New York when she was named "Best Sommelier" in 2022.
In the same year, Nikita embarked on a collaboration with renowned glassware designer Josephinenhütte, Kurt Josef Zalto, who curated the creation of custom glassware for KO restaurant, the "Josephine" glasses. Nikita says, "The glasses elevate the wine consumption. Our customers adore them, and the Josephine wine glasses have transformed the overall wine-drinking experience. They don't fade into the background; instead, they demand attention."
Nikita's wine list highlights the excellence of established wine icons and emerging promises from regions around the world. The wine program at "Momofuku Ko" is considered the most comprehensive in New York. Its depth and attention are unrivaled in a community so devoted to wine, as highlighted by Rajat Parr of Star Wine List when the restaurant won the "Grand Prix" in the Star Wine List of the Year New York 2023.
