The news
The problem is that they don't read reviews carefully, or past years' news: the luxurious DK Oyster Bar in Mykonos is, in fact, once again at the center of a controversy, now becoming famous for its astronomical prices. Located on the beautiful beach of Platys Gialos, this popular beach club has left more than one tourist baffled with high bills, so much so that there is no shortage of complaints on TripAdvisor. The latest stirring affair involves a couple of tourists, who, upon returning to the United States, found themselves charged a whopping 690 pounds (more than 800 euros) for two drinks.
The story, ladibible.com reports, began with the promise of free use of sunbeds on the beach, as long as something is ordered from the bar. A seemingly innocuous proposal that led the couple to order two cocktails, the initial cost of which was €51 each. Yet the surprise came when they got home, being charged a total of 690 pounds for those two drinks. "CAUTION, avoid this place!" the tourist wrote, strongly advising against the club.
Similar incidents are nothing new for DK Oyster (read about them here). In 2023, two American friends, Amber Pace and Aubrey, experienced a similar misadventure. Amber reports that she ordered fried squid for 17 pounds and her friend king crab claws for 28 pounds. However, when the bill arrived, the figures were quite different: 98 euros for squid and 185 euros for fried shellfish. After trying to complain to the manager, the two friends were accused of not paying enough attention to the menu.
TripAdvisor reviews and menu photos confirm the high cost of dishes and drinks. Small cocktails start at 25 euros, a fresh orange juice costs 18 euros, and a coffee 15 euros. Even the main dishes are pricey: a Caesar salad with jumbo shrimp goes up to 87.50 euros, a club sandwich costs 44.50 euros, and a simple breakfast omelet comes close to 25 euros. But nothing justifies soaring last-minute increases.
Dimitrios Kalamaras, the manager of DK Oyster, sought to stick up for the high prices, saying that the loungers require minimal consumption and that menus with prices are clearly displayed on blackboards near the entrance. "At DK Oyster, we set prices in the way we think is appropriate for our restaurant, and we will not bow to the will of influencers attracted to the beautiful island of Mykonos. We believe that the value of the experience offered is high and we are not going to explain why we charge more than a supermarket or a traditional tavern," Kalamaras said.
Despite these details, many visitors continue to be stunned by the outrageous bills. While for some the allure of Mykonos and the beauty of the location may justify the prices, others are left with the bitterness of an expensive and highly shady experience. DK Oyster Bar, therefore, confirms itself as an exclusive place, where luxury and high prices go hand in hand, leaving tourists to decide whether it is worth it.
