Biography
Born on July 19, 1982, in Frederiksberg, Denmark, Esben Holmboe Bang grew up in an environment where culture and nature merge. His childhood, marked by a move to a hippie community after his parents' divorce, becomes the first canvas on which his culinary future begins to take shape. The decision to abandon secondary education to pursue cooking leads him to an apprenticeship that is only the beginning of a journey rich in discoveries and accolades.
Moving to Oslo in 2001 for love, Esben begins a career that soon sees him at the forefront of Norwegian gastronomy. His vision finds home and form at the restaurant Maaemo, opened in 2010. Here, his dedication to nature and commitment to using local, organic, and biodynamic ingredients converge in a menu that explores and celebrates the Norwegian terroir with pure mastery.
Receiving his first two Michelin stars in 2012, just 15 months after Maaemo's opening, marks a fundamental milestone in his career, further consolidated by the acquisition of the third star in 2016. These accolades are not just badges of honor but testimonies to Esben's impact on the international culinary scene, with Maaemo becoming an emblem of a new Nordic cuisine that engages with nature in every dish.
