What's René Redzepi up to, who, as a reminder, has announced the closure of Noma at the end of the year? Among other things, he's created and narrated a docuseries set to debut on AppleTV+ on July 19th. Titled Omnivore, it will take viewers on a global journey, using food as a lens to explore wide-ranging content.
The press release outlines the plot of "Omnivore": "Each episode celebrates the cultivation, transformation, and consumption of eight of the world's most essential ingredients: bananas, chili peppers, coffee, corn, pork, rice, salt, and tuna, revealing how they are milestones of our global cultural heritage. René Redzepi and Emmy-winning executive producer Matt Goulding ('Anthony Bourdain: Explore Parts Unknown') lead the audience on a global odyssey, uncovering the complex stories behind these ingredients that have shaped societies, cultures, beliefs, and the course of human history."
The Series: "Omnivore" takes viewers on a global journey across a diverse range of destinations including Denmark, Serbia, Thailand, Spain, Japan, Djibouti, Peru, South Korea, France, Colombia, India, Bali, Rwanda, Mexico, and several locations in the United States. In each episode, René Redzepi and his team delve into local culinary traditions, showcasing efforts to honor, preserve, and protect Earth's offerings.
"'Omnivore' is a decade-long dream that has finally come to life, and I couldn't be prouder of this extraordinary team," stated the renowned Danish chef. "This show is a testament to what makes food truly extraordinary: the ingredients, the people, the stories, the pure magic of cooking. 'Omnivore' is not just a culinary program; it is a journey into the soul of food culture and its vibrant community. Through the lens of eight unique ingredients, we traverse our delicious planet and meet the diverse people who inhabit it. We have traveled across five continents, uncovering countless stories along the way. This journey has reinforced an undeniable truth: food is everything. Any story worth telling can be conveyed through what we cook and how we eat. Because food is never just food: it is a window into our lives, our history, and our world."
