At Grillaera Burger, staff salaries are prominently displayed on the menu. A bold choice or marketing gimmick? Here’s what the owners have to say.
The news
How many of you would be willing to show everyone your monthly earnings? Three young restaurateurs at a Spanish steakhouse have taken the word "transparency" literally. Staff salaries are clearly stated on the menu. Customers at Grillaera Burger, with dual locations in Málaga and Algeciras, can read the expected compensation for the various jobs held by the restaurant's employees alongside the prices of the dishes.
It is no longer news of the difficulty in finding staff in the restaurant industry. Still, this Spanish restaurant is trying to "adopt fair practices to make the profession more livable and eradicate a social scourge," as they write right on the menu. This choice has gone viral on social media, dividing the public between those who approve and those who think it is inappropriate.
Seven cooks, eight waitresses, a dishwasher, three bookkeepers, a maintenance worker, and a marketing manager, comprise the staff – 80 percent of whom have permanent contracts. Seventy percent enjoy five workdays and two days off, which is quite rare in the restaurant industry, for 40 hours per week. The salary of the servers is 1,430 euros net per month, on par with the Italian average.
Salaries aside, on the website, the restaurant is called "The crazy show grill," emphasizing an all-around experience. Bartenders and waiters do not just bring dishes to the table but become actual 'entertainers.' Between the masks of Homer Simpson, Spiderman and Shrek, the evening becomes a little show for adults and children. It’s such a vibe that one young man in love decided to propose to his future wife dressed as Spiderman.
