Joe Beddia was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After the untimely death of his mother when he was seven years old, he faced several family challenges. Growing up, he developed a passion for cooking, especially pizza, which led him to explore and perfect traditional baking techniques.
In 2013, he opened the first location of Pizzeria Beddia in Philadelphia's Fishtown neighborhood. The location was known for its simplicity: no phone, no reservations, and only two employees. Joe prepared the dough himself and limited production to 40 pies a day. This artisanal approach and meticulous attention to ingredients quickly caught the attention of fans and food critics.
In 2015, Bon Appétit named the restaurant the best pizzeria in America; this recognition led to its growing popularity, with customers willing to wait hours to enjoy his creations.
After five years in business, Beddia closed the original eatery to consider new projects. In 2019, he opened a new version of the sign, still in Fishtown, but with a more modern approach: a larger space with seating, a bar serving natural wines, and an expanded menu that includes appetizers and desserts.
In 2024 his Pizzeria Beddia has been named 13th on the Pizza World and 3rd on Pizza USA by 50 Top Pizza.
His philosophy is based on simplicity and the use of quality ingredients. He favors organic flours, selected tomatoes, and long fermentation to achieve a crispy and flavorful crust. His minimalist approach and care reflect a deep respect for tradition while incorporating modern techniques and a contemporary sensibility.
