Jordi Artal is a Canadian-born, self-taught chef of Catalan descent who has turned his passion into a stellar career. He is the founder of Cinc Sentits restaurant in Barcelona, known for his modern interpretation of Catalan cuisine, which has earned him two Michelin stars.
Born in Canada to Catalan parents, Jordi Artal grew up between Canada and California. From a young age, he showed a deep interest in gastronomy, helping his mother and grandmother prepare family meals. These early experiences instilled in him an appreciation for the culture of his homeland and its authentic flavors.
Before breaking through, he spent a decade as a technology executive in Silicon Valley, serving as chief marketing officer for an IT company. Despite his professional success, his passion led him to reconsider his choices.
In 2002, a visit to Spain rekindled his childhood memories. This experience inspired him to open his own restaurant. In 2004, together with his sister Amèlia, he opened Cinc Sentits in Barcelona, with the goal of offering contemporary dishes that would stimulate all five senses.
The eatery quickly gained recognition for its unique offering. In 2008, it was awarded its first Michelin star. In 2018, Artal decided to move to a new location at 60 Entença Street; this change led to the temporary loss of the star, which was promptly regained in 2019, followed by its second in 2020.
Jordi is distinguished by its use of local and seasonal ingredients, with a focus on artisanal products. His approach aims to evoke the past through courses that combine tradition and innovation.
In 2024, he launched a new casual dining concept called Sentit Comú by Jordi Artal, located inside Time Out Market. This project reflects Artal's desire to make Catalan cuisine accessible to a wider audience by offering contemporary reinterpretations.
