Matteo Metullio: From a Prodigious Youth to Michelin Star Recognition, the Extraordinary Rise of Italy's Youngest Starred Chef

Biography

Born in 1989 in Trieste, Matteo Metullio has become a leading figure in the Italian gastronomic scene, renowned for his innovative approach that blends tradition with modernity. His culinary journey began at the I.P.S.S.A.R. hotel school in Falcade and continued in various restaurants, taking a decisive turn under the mentorship of Norbert Niederkofler at the Hotel Rosa Alpina. After formative experiences at 'La Speranzina' in Sirmione and as Sous Chef at La Siriola of Hotel Ciasa Salares, Metullio became the executive chef of La Siriola, retaining its Michelin star and becoming the youngest starred chef in Italy.

In 2017, his culinary mastery earned him a second Michelin star, further cementing his reputation in the culinary world. However, in February 2019, Metullio left La Siriola in San Cassiano in Alta Badia, which led to the restaurant's closure a month after his departure. This personal decision to focus on his family brought him back to Trieste.

Back in Trieste, Metullio embarked on a new venture with Davide De Pra, taking charge of Harry’s Piccolo Restaurant and Harry’s Bistrò. Soon, Harry’s Piccolo was awarded its first and then a second Michelin star, marking a historic moment for Trieste. Metullio's cuisine stands out for its use of local and international products, skillfully balancing tradition and innovation. His culinary philosophy emphasizes the importance of flavors and the continuous search for new techniques and combinations, showcasing his talent and passion for cooking.

His exceptional success led him to be both the youngest Italian chef to receive a Michelin star and the youngest to be awarded two stars. In autumn 2018, he also brought a Michelin star to the restaurant in Piazza dell’Unità in Trieste, reaffirming the city's culinary importance. This achievement was dedicated to his family, Davide De Pra, and the restaurant's owners. Celebrated chefs like Norbert Niederkofler and Massimo Bottura have praised Metullio, recognizing him as a prodigy of Italian cuisine.
